ABOUT

WILLIAM MISA (MISA ARTZ)

Whenever I draw, I always ensure that my art fulfill an obligation to bring Joy and Hope to the viewer.

"My art style, which I call "Roughotorealism," combines photorealism with rough textures and details. While some may view my work as realistic or even hyperrealistic, a closer look reveals the pencil strokes that create a textured appearance. This unique approach makes my artwork feel more alive, reflecting the natural imperfections of reality. I believe art should not appear computer-generated but should embody the nuanced and varied textures of life."

BIOGRAPHY OF MISA ARTZ

William Samwel Misa, also known as MISA_ARTZ, is a Tanzanian self-taught artist whose journey into the world of art began in the late 1990s when his natural talent was recognized by elders in his community.

Despite earning a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Dar Es Salaam in 2018, William's true passion lies in the world of art, which led him to embark on a full-time artistic career in late 2023.

Specializing in Photorealism and Surrealism, William's art is a testament to his dedication to bringing hope and solace to those facing adversity. Having battled his own demons, including a period of depression in 2017, William's work is deeply personal, aiming to uplift viewers and provide a sense of optimism. His portraits often depict individuals who inspire hope in others, whether they are celebrities or ordinary people with extraordinary stories.

Using graphite and charcoal pencils as his primary mediums, William's artistic style is characterized by its natural, rough aesthetic, which he refers to as "Rouphotorealism." Occasionally incorporating soft and oil pastels, he strives to capture the essence of his subjects in a way that feels authentic and emotive.

Since making his debut as an artist in mid-2019, William has garnered recognition within the artistic community, becoming a member of the esteemed Tanzania Fine Art (TFA) group and later in 2023 he became a Gallery member of Nafasi Art Space. Over the course of his five-year career, he has participated in five exhibitions both within Dar Es Salaam and Zanzibar, showcasing his work to diverse audiences.

Beyond his artistic endeavors, William is committed to nurturing emerging talent in Tanzania. In 2020, he founded the Michoro Hai Academy, an online platform dedicated to coaching youth in realistic art skills. He later established Michoro Hai Studios in September 2023, providing coaching (online and physical; creating 11 good artists UpToDate), selling art supplies, and fostering self-sufficiency through business education to aspiring artists, and providing them with some employment opportunities through his running studio.

Currently, William is working on various initiatives to broaden the Tanzanian art scene, including his YouTube channel "Misa_Artz", and ArtBiz Tz" and plans to establish artistic classes for children in the near future. He envisions a future where artists in Tanzania are supported by a robust governmental system and aims to expand his reach through international collaborations and exhibitions.

With a passion for exploration and experimentation, William continues to evolve as an artist, exploring new themes, experimenting with different mediums, and seeking opportunities for growth and collaboration.
